Borehole 1007, Semipalatinsk Test Site

On a flat, featureless steppe in the "Balapan" section of the Semipalatinsk Test Site are many boreholes for underground nuclear tests. This one, #1007, suffered what they called an “emergency situation” when the nuclear blast below vented through the well. Considerable radioactivity is present in the immediate vicinity.
