Above and Beyond: A History of Aviation in Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is pleased to announce the release of the documentary “Above and Beyond: A History of Aviation in Santa Barbara.” “Aviation has played an interesting and important role in Santa Barbara for almost 100 years and we are thrilled to be part of it, from the early pioneers such as the Loughheed Brothers and Earle Ovington, to today’s new John T. Rickard Terminal,” said Airport Director, Hazel Johns. Above and Beyond” takes viewers on a journey through six distinct aviation eras – the barnstorming years, airports in the area and how the Santa Barbara Airport came to be located in Goleta, the Marine Corps Air Station, post war progress, business and innovation and space flight, the US Forest Service Air Tanker Base, the Reagan presidential years, the construction of runway safety areas and finally landing in the new state-of- the-art airline terminal. The story is told through the eyes of pilots, historians, engineers, airport staff and the people that lived through these historic times. Using rare footage and photographs the film captures aviation in Santa Barbara for the last 100 years. Tony Ruggieri, Emmy Award winning City TV Production Supervisor and other members of City TV crew took 3 years to create the documentary that was originally imagined by retired Airport Director, Karen Ramsdell. “When Ms. Ramsdell and I met to discuss her idea, we thought it would be about a 30 minute piece. But the more we worked on it the more we realized we had much more to offer the public than 30 minutes,” said Tony Ruggieri. The film will be on permanent display in the Earle Ovington historic terminal at the Santa Barbara Airport.
